Can harm be done to an engine by having to much oil in the pan ?

I recently had the oil changed on my new car by the selling dealer. The dipstick now shows 1/2 quart to much oil in the pan.


Is it now standard to put extra oil in a vehicle.

No, it isn't standard. Half a quart probably won't hurt (unless you have a lot of steep hills in your area), but too much oil in the engine can make the oil level high enough so that the crankshaft hits the oil while it is spinning around and this will make the oil foam up. When oil foams up it will pretty much loose all of its lubricating properties until it settles back into a liquid and also the oil pump won't pump the foam very well.
over filling can make the oil foam and cause a seal or gasket to blow.you should keep it right at the full mark,but if its a little low it shouldnt hurt nothing.a little low is better then too full.
The extra oil needs to come out. It's not a huge problem, but here's what happens...


As the crankshaft turns in the engine, it dips down into the oil and froths it - or adds air to the oil. Since the oil pump is very good at pumping fluid but not air, the oil pump does not pump the oil efficiently and can starve the engine of lubricant.


It is a good idea to check the oil level before you leave and have them correct the problem right then.

is it 3 inches up the dipstick?

i cannot be talked into believing that a GM trained tech would put too much oil in a new GM

1/2 qt is ok but a 1 or 2 over will blow out the oil seals (big problem)
Too much oil in a car is not good for it but 1/2 a quart is not enough to do any damage at all. oh and definately do not use dusty k's advise that would cause problems.
It can harm the engine. It's better to be a little low than over filled. Need to drain some until it is below or right at the full mark. The book for the vehicle will tell you to never overfill with oil.

You normally fill your engine according to the dipstick indicators. Maybe the one who changed your oil did it haphazardly or was just an apprentice. Whatever the reason was, take the car back to the dealer and tell them the problem so they don't do it again. You paid for the service, so you expect the right service too(altho I agree 1/2 qt extra will not harm your car). But still that wsn't right.
The biggest problem with having to much oil in your engine is that the extra oil could cause your engine gaskets and seals to blow and then start leaking. Having one half quart to much oil above your full mark on your engine dipstick normally will not hurt anything. But since your selling dealer added to much to begin with; you should take it back to that dealer and have them drain the one half quart from your engine so that you can sleep better.
When r u checking it, u need to check it when its cold. And half a quart isnt to much nor will it damage the motor.
to much oil is worse than not enough, it is submerging you oil pump/screen, just take the oil filter off and drain it and put it on start the car for 15 seconds, shut off and recheck. good luck.
