i always pull all bolts out then pull pan ,clean both surfaces and put gasket sealant on pan,put gasket on pan then put pan in place put bolts back in,the important step torque bolts to around 15 pounds dont over tighten you will break gasket. i always let sit over nite.hope this helps

Whats the blow by blow for changing the oil pan gasket on a pontiac 400 1973?
remove motor mount bolts, remove 4screws and the flywheel cover .disconect batt. remove starter tie it over out of tour way. using a suitable jack or engine lift raise motor as high as possible if neccassry remove fan. then put wood blocks 3-4 inches between moter mounts and frame. lower engine onto blocks. remove bolts and oilpan clean surfaces install new gasket use glue tohold in place 3m weather strip cement works great.reinstall pan and reassemble. note four long studs installed in oil pan bolt holes in block can help to align pan without gasket slipping then remove studs and use the boltsWhats the blow by blow for changing the oil pan gasket on a pontiac 400 1973?
