popped a whole in it by accident in the process of fixin it but not that mechanically knowledgeableNeed some advice on changing a oil pan on a 98 v6 stang. how hard is it and how long shouild it take 4 me todo
Its not a problem.......!
There are only 16 small bolts holding it on.
Clearance is the problem to get it off. Unbolt one of the Motor Mounts.....with a jack, jack up the motor (or with some help lift it up) and with some wood blocks...place the blocks ';IN'; the motor mount to keep the clearance safely.
Now you will have room to rotate and remove the pan...its a piece of cake.
';The hole'; , also no big deal. When you have the pan off, take it to the nearest ';Muffler shop'; and usually for $5 bucks, they will ';gas weld'; (acy/oxy) the hole up for you.
If the hole is large, place a small piece of metal on the ';out-side'; of the pan, and then weld the patch in. Outside you can inspect it after it is installed.....if it leaks later, it can be fixed with out pulling out the pan....(It can be welded on the car...on a lift rack).
If its a small hole, you can use a small ';bolt';, 2 metal washers, and a nut. Using two rubber washers to seal the hole, and bolted tight, it will last the life of the car.
Place the head of the bolt inside the pan, this will leave the threads on the out side of the pan, again it can be checked once and a while, and can also be welded from the outside of the car later....then you can cut off the threads to improve appearances...if you want.
Only you will know its there.....you have other options, of coarse as you thought of them....I personally would do just as above...because its quicker, and cheaper. The base pan is just a catch pan and has no pressure on it.
Replace the gaskets, (using sealant and using sewing thread to tie each side of the pan gasket down, on the ends and middle) replace the pan.....it will just jump into place.
The bolts on the ends of the pan are larger and longer so get them in the right place (4 bolts) the rest are all the same.
There is the answer to your question....other wise its a piece of cake.....and a way to spend some fun hours with your friends. After 3 or 4 hours.....your done. When your through,
Go get a ';cool one'; for me and tell yourself.....
';Good Job, Guys!';
