Is $400 to replace an oil pan on a 96 camry an average price?

the toyota dealer mechanic says ai need a new oil pan (which will cost $400). is this a rip-off, or is this really how much it would cost to replace and install it?Is $400 to replace an oil pan on a 96 camry an average price?
only reason i can think of it costing that much, is after you ran over a steal pole, ran it thru the pan and broke the crank in half lol.

this guy is ripping you off, watch out for jerks like this. there are many like him out there. go to any given salvage yard and pick one up for a twenty dollar bill. and get a new gasket at auto-zone for around 5 bux or so. have a freind install it for you, pay him a twenty and it should be a fair deal.

but something just doesnt seem right about him telling you that you need a new oil pan, they just dont go bad. unless you ran over something, and with it only being a 96, i dont see it rusting thru. heck my 64' chevys oil pan should be worm dirt by now lol!!!

i had a 98 toyota corrolla and i think i know what your problem really is. do you have to continously have to keep putting oil in your car???? have someone jack up your car, look in the area of where the motor and tranny meet. is there alot of oil in this particular spot???? bet u have a rear seal out it happened to mine. and this will run you around 300 bux, i think he was wanting to sell you a oil pan and have you comming back later for a rear seal. i bet you he knows dang well its is really your rear seal already. rear seals run about 7 to 10 bux t auto zone but installing them is better left to an experienced mechanic.

good luck and watch out for these jerks trying to make a double sell on ya, find a trustworthy mechanic, ask around your freinds. chances are someone knows a good one around there (nine times out of ten, he isnt one of these guys that is fresh out of some auto tech school, its someone who had done almost all his life and for his passion of automobiles). Is $400 to replace an oil pan on a 96 camry an average price?
Oil pans don't usually go bad. Unless you have hit something or I guess it could have rusted from the outside. Now the gasket can start to leak, but I have tighten many pans up and solved the problem. Are you pouring out oil or something? Why did the deaIer say you needed a new one? You might just need a new gasket. If you really do need one I would suggest a used or aftermarket one and any decent shop can replace this. 400 sounds like a lot for this job.
I think that you need to go to a different company to get a new oil pan, it's a ripoff.
Sounds like a rip-off. Try getting a pan from a junkyard.
If it includes labor it's probably right as labor is always much higher than the cost of the part.
i paid under 225 for this and once i saw how it was done- I WOULDVE DONE IT MYSELF for the $65 part
sounds like a bargen-for the dealer
hell no, you can buy an oil pan from a parts store for $25 dollars. see if you can get someone to install one for you. I if you live in Albuquerque, NM. don't do it it's a reap off
Go to another dealer or mechanic because it does sound too expensive!
An oil pan should not cost that much. Installing it should take less than 30mins as well. Do an ebay search for one..then do a search on how to install it. (Lift the car, unscrew some screws, and screw in a new one) That is of course you are talking about what I think you are talking about.
My husband is a mechanic and says that is rather expensive. That may include the labor as well as to solve the problem.
