Does anyone know how to get a stripped oil bolt off the oil pan? It is on a '99 grand am?

Is the bolt head stripped or are the threads stripped?





If the bolt head is stripped, use a pair of locking pliers(vice-grips) and replace with a new bolt, you can buy them at a discount auto parts store such as Advance Auto or AutoZone.





If the threads are stripped, wedge a flat head screw driver or a putty knife between the bolt head and the oil pan and pry out as you turn the bolt out. Once you remove the bolt, buy a tap at either auto parts store and re-thread the hole and replace with a new bolt.





What ever you do don't wiggle the bolt back and forth, this will enlarge the hole and then you'll have to remove the oil pan to fix.Does anyone know how to get a stripped oil bolt off the oil pan? It is on a '99 grand am?
try a pair of vise grips, and then buy a new plug. or you could try a smaller socket, hammer it on and then hopefully it'll bring it loose.Does anyone know how to get a stripped oil bolt off the oil pan? It is on a '99 grand am?

Try to drill it with a small bit,then use an easyout.
depends if the bolt head is rounded off or the bolt is broke in the block.if you rounde the head off,take a hammer and hit the head of the bolt,hard a few times,see if you can get the socket back on,and if not try a standard and metric socket that will drive on there with a hammer,the hammer blows will help loosen the bolt.if the bolt is missing the head.grind it smooth if possible,and center punch it,drill and tap.if it hole is too big for the repair,get a heli coil from your local parts dealer to repair the hole.
i agree with mister ss. you should pry down while turning.be sure to replace the plug and check the threads in the oil pan. if there damaged you need to make sure they get repaired or it will leak.
Vice Grips.
Try a Tap Set
12 point socket or if all else fail's vise grips and a hammer will do the trick.
take a screwdriver and pry on the bolt as you are turning it out.
Use the smallest 12 point socket that will just fit on the end of the head. Hit it on the rest of the way with a hammer. Then break the bolt loose.
i have done this before. go to napa pick up a new drain plug, then use vise grips. works great.
